The Pavilion has found a new home!
The Pavilion's time at Langara College in Vancouver came to a close in the fall of 2010.

It was disassembled, and all 105 pieces were shipped up to the Heffley Creek area of British Columbia (about 45 minutes north of Kamloops). Thanks to the generosity of Vancouver-based art collectors and patrons Jane Irwin and Ross Hill, The Pavilion is being re-built as a permanent structure at their Art Ranch, a rural extension of their GreyChurch Project Space.

In June, 2011, over 23 friends and volunteers pitched in to help begin the process of reconstruction in the first annual Domeraising party.
Thanks to everyone who came out and pitched in!

This is the first stage in what will likely be a long-term building venture, making the Pavilion a self-contained site for future projects in relation to it's new rural context.

Stay tuned for future posts and updates on the project, and wish me luck in getting it weatherproofed and fully functional!

Sadly, The Pavilion project has come to an end.

Thanks to everyone who supported this project, either by volunteering during the build phase, contributing your fantastic artwork and ideas, and to all those who came out to the events.

It was a really amazing experience for me, and I hope for others as well.
I will be posting tons of pictures over the next while, so keep checking in...

Open. Uh. Open it. Uh. Uh. is based on the Arecibo Message, a logographic
system beamed into space by late astrochemist and foremost proprietor of
popular astronomy, Carl Sagan, and his associates in 1974. The site functions
as a realm of interception, observation and interpretation of one possible version
of our hedonistic future. Drawing, sculpture and video are used to convey
Sagan’s utopian project of creating a universally understood language.
 
 
Possibly Possibly (Flag) is the second in an ongoing series of flags that
are to be flown until they are destroyed by the wind. The flag is marbled
using a traditional fabric dyeing technique that produces unique monoprints,
and features a Necker cube, a drawing that shifts its perspectival orientation
according to which element of the form the viewer focuses their attention. 
Possibly Possibly (Flag) is a permanent gift to The Pavilion.

Statminlaxed re-creates Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion Map, a map that
eliminates graphic distortion and thus the representation of global influence,
out of black fabric which is subsequently burned. Documentation of this burnt
flag is presented on a freestanding interpretive panel outside of The Pavilion.
By re-organizing the word Dymaxion, (a word which incorporates 'dynamic',
maximum, and 'tension' that Fuller used to designate a variety of projects),
into Staminlaxed (a word that Bartholomew relates to a combination of 'static',
'minimum', and 'relaxed'), this new flag questions the possibility of global democracy.
By photographing this burnt flag, the destabilized object then becomes re-
aestheticized and repurposed as display.

A reading on the theme of “the university” in conjunction with a projection of Sabine Bitter and Helmut Weber’s “The University Paradox”, an installation shown concurrently in Galerie Grita Insam, Vienna.

Organized by Jeff Derksen, a group reading of poets who work in and through the education industry. All language is in solidarity against "the shipwreck of the singular" (George Oppen) with all eyes on the future horizon.

The lineup of readers is: Clint Burnham, Stephen Collis, Jeff Derksen, Kim Duff, Reg Johanson, Larissa Lai, Donato Mancini, and Cecily Nicholson.

A work of mediated images of student protests, university occupations, and political aesthetics from 1968 to today. Drawn from the archives of Simon Fraser University and documentation of the recent occupation of the University of Vienna, this exhibition of mediated photographs springs from the super stylish and super affective political and aesthetic revolutionary campus movements.

Natalie says: “Not only are they the ultimate fastener, they are extenders, create pivot points, make things removable and of course, are cute and round. Now is your chance to snap together your world. Use provided materials to make a bag or a belt or an apron - or something far less conventional if you prefer. Or bring something useless and turn it into something useful! Maybe you have an ugly belt and a lonely change purse – bring them together to make a fabulous tool belt! Add a pocket to a hat! Make a sausage-link belt! The possibilities are literally endless.”

Fee: $10.00, payable by cash only at the door.

Natalie Purschwitz has a BFA in Intermedia from ECIAD and a BA in Archaeology from U of Calgary. She has shown her artwork internationally and has a clothing line called Hunt & Gather. Owl Alarm replaces the shrill electronic beeping of conventional gallery and shop door alarms with the call of a spotted owl . Having migrated from Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Owl Alarm is now a permanent fixture in The Pavilion.

featuring works by Langara College Fine Arts Students in the Advanced Sculpture 1 course. Students were asked to create sculptures in response the the work of visionary architect Buckminster Fuller and The Pavilion as a site for experimentation and investigation.

Students featured in this exhibition include Carrie Allison, Sheena Anderson, Jessica Atkinson, Megan Dietrich, Pauline Liang, Estrella Lucera De la Rosa, Markus Mayer, Kole Mayes, Will Morrison, Kate Neil, and Conrad Sly.

The Langara College Centre for Art in Public Spaces
invites you to Ron Sakolsky's reading from his newest book
Swift Winds.

Swift Winds is a backpocket compendium of subversive texts, marvelous manifestoes, mutinous rants, outrageous ideas, utopian dreams, impossible demands and incendiary broadsides strategically aimed at countering the pathos of miserablism with the uncontrollable laughter of the insurgent imagination.

Anarchist poet and scholar Ron Sakolsky is the author of several books, including "Creating Anarchy" (2005), and "Islands of Resistance: Pirate Radio in Canada" (due 2010). Selections from his utopian literature collection are available to read on-site from 1-5pm Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until February 6, 2010.

The Pavilion is finally nearing completion, and will be open to the public in early January.

I will keep you posted as to the date and time of our Grand Opening celebration, as well as open hours until the end of April, so please keep your eyes peeled for the next announcement.

Ideas and Integrities: a Utopian Library will be our first exhibition. This show will feature the Utopian Literature collection of Denman Island anarchist poet and scholar Ron Sakolsky, who will also perform a reading of “Lost Utopias” from his new book Swift Winds.

Upcoming projects at the Pavilion also include a workshop by Makeshift designer Natalie Purschwitz, and a musical performance by local synthesizer guru Sinoia Caves, with other exciting shows and events to be announced soon.

The Pavilion is located at Langara College, 100 West 49th avenue in Vancouver. It is between Main and Cambie. The Canada Line Langara stop is only 2 blocks west.

Langara College Centre for Art in Public Spaces welcomes new Artist in Residence Holly Ward. The Vancouver-based artist will be on campus to install her public art project titled The Pavilion. The geodesic dome begins construction on September 25, and will serve as a project space for Ward until April 2010. The dome will be built as an experimental collaboration involving Langara College students and community volunteers.

"This is my first public art commission, and I am excited to move beyond the boundaries of the gallery and create something dynamic and new," says Ward.

The Pavilion will be formed in the shape of a geodesic dome, an alternative structural framework featuring no right angles. First designed in the 1930s, the architectural geodesic dome form symbolizes difference and utopian thinking, and has been used in large scale projects including the Montreal Expo in 1967. By placing a dome on the Langara College campus, students and the larger artistic community will have a chance to explore the remnants of utopian thinking and artistic experimentation.

Ward received her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Guelph in 2006 after completing her undergraduate degrees in both Fine Arts and English at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the University of New Brunswick. Her work has been in a number of recent exhibitions including How Soon is Now, Vancouver Art Gallery; Radical Rupture, Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery, UBC; and Vancouver and Voice Overhead, Insa Art Space, Seoul, South Korea. Her most recent exhibition is at Republic Gallery in Vancouver until October 8, 2009.

The Langara College Centre for Art in Public Spaces

Initiated in August 2008, the Langara College Centre for Art in Public Spaces is designed to inspire collaboration among students, professional artists, and the community through creative projects. These projects include Artists in Residence programs, guest speakers, and continually evolving curricula. The integration of visiting professionals, collaborative exploration and learning opportunities makes the program unique in Canada.

Langara's first Artist in Residence was Vancouver-based artist, curator and writer Kristina Lee Podesva. Her project, titled Vehicle, ran from January 13 until April 21, 2009 and featured a symbolic and architectural space of shipping containers to catalyze a greater understanding of globalization among the College community, neighborhood and beyond.
